Disruption of Learning
When the pandemic disrupted schools in spring 2020, educators predicted remote learning would set up many children for failure, especially students of color and those from poor families. Test scores from the first months of remote learning showed students falling months behind in reading and math. This fall, as many students returned to classrooms for the first time after 18 months of disruptions, some teachers have found the learning loss is worse than projected.
The effects of COVID-19 on learning are obvious to teachers. Many fourth-graders returned to school reading on the same level as they had in the second grade when the pandemic started—leaving them more than two grade levels behind now. (Wall Street Journal: by Yoree Koh, Oct 2021)
COVID-19: The Perfect Storm
It is easy to understand that COVID-19 has created “a perfect storm” of conditions that have jeopardized children’s education.
Many students returned to school this fall having made little or no progress over the past year. This left students at least a grade-level behind in their skills.
Providing Access
In order to set up future generations for success we need to understand the unique effect of COVID-19 has had on low-income students and communities of color. Providing access to quality individualized attention helps student realize their potential.
Presenting material in a way that encourages students to actively analyze and interact with information and leverage their existing knowledge as a base upon which to build new understanding and meaning. Teaching by combining auditory, visual, and hands-on activities increases learning significantly.
