Writing for Elementary Students: Getting the mechanics down and developing a proper style. Handwriting and spelling can also be included.
- Writes illegibly
- Grips pencil tightly
- Reverses letters (b/d)
- Can’t write on the line
- Erases often
If any of these are familiar, RITES can help. We use multisensory approaches to help younger students master handwriting skills.
In the early years, the focus of writing is usually letter formation and handwriting, along with some spelling. While we all have the ability to learn, some students take longer to master these skills. Beginning in second grade, the focus shifts toward expressing ideas in complete sentences with proper mechanics and grammar (capitalization, punctuation, agreement, spelling, etc.).
In the later elementary years, the focus shifts yet again to written response to reading, with well-crafted paragraphs and clear, organized expression of ideas. If your child struggles in one or more of these areas, the gap between what he or she knows and what he or she can show widens and affects many aspects of your child’s academic life.
RITES teachers make sure your child’s foundational writing skills are strengthened. We actively work to shrink the gap between thought and expression on paper. Give your child concrete tools and strategies to become a more confident and assured writer.
Individual handwriting, writing and spelling tutoring is available all year-round. RITES Summer Writing Programs incorporate these teaching approaches into a small-group setting for a socially dynamic and productive experience.
