Reading for Middle School Students
Middle School students are responsible for more material, with an increase in the following tasks:
- Reading volume and content
- Short- and long-term assignments
- Quizzes and tests, all associated with that reading
If your child is struggling to keep up with the reading, understand what he or she has read and make connections to it, or still struggles with unfamiliar words and fluency while reading, the impact is significant on both your student’s grades and his or her self-esteem – a critical aspect of every middle-schooler’s life.
RITES certified reading specialists are sensitive to the emerging independence and self-consciousness of middle school students. Through the trusting relationship between the RITES teacher and your child, we involve the student directly in the process of understanding his or her learning style to recognize weak areas and use relative strengths to transform these weaknesses into areas of competence. As with all RITES tutoring, we pinpoint the skills each student needs to improve and focus each lesson on building these specific skills. RITES reading specialists know exactly how to approach each element of the reading process, and they deeply understand the distinct expectations for middle school reading.
For middle school students still struggling with the mechanics of reading (phonemic awareness, decoding, encoding, fluency), we have RITES reading specialists trained in specific, scientifically researched and proven multisensory teaching approaches, such as Orton-Gillingham, to remediate these skills so your child achieves reading success.
Individual reading tutoring is available all year-round. RITES Summer Reading Programs incorporate these multisensory teaching approaches into a small-group setting for a socially dynamic and productive experience.
