Moses Brown and Rocky Hill Summer Programs
Authors Workshop: Melinda Siomiak and Diana Carlson have taught RITES’ young authors and illustrators to hone their craft while working through the steps of the writing process to “publish” their own book. The workshop ended with an Authors’ Reading (Publishing Party), during which each student read his or her newly completed work to friends and family members.
Study Smarter, Not Harder with Written Expression (Middle School):
Saskia Nilsen’s class explored various note-taking formats, memory strategies and how to develop essays. They took a multiple intelligence survey to discover their strengths and weaknesses, helping them better understand how their brains work. The class also focused on key writing strategies, such as how to make an essay dazzle by using upgraded phrases and vocabulary. Each student practiced a lot of different strategies that he or she can try out further at school to see which ones work best for that student’s particular learning style.
Reading and Math (Grades 1 & 2): Janet Burnham and Santana Sluss’ first and second graders are playing a domino game that reinforces addition and subtraction skills. The goal of the game is to match the quantity of the domino in the “train” with a domino in your hand. Students also worked on reading comprehension questions, counting skills, and short vowel sounds.
Reading and Math (Grades 3 & 4): Crystal Monteiro’s third and fourth graders are learning about idioms. Students are reading a play that has many idioms and are selecting an idiom to draw as if they were the character “Amelia Bedelia.” This process deepens the students’ understanding of these quirky aspects of our language.
