Local author, artist and designer visits with RITES Summer Program to share creative process
The RITES Summer Program is excited to share that we had a special guest visit our summer program students today, as part of our celebration of National Summer Learning Week!
Amy Leidtke is a local artist, designer and educator who collaborated to write a new book about Leonardo da Vinci and his creative process, called Leonardo’s Art Workshop: Invent, Create, and Make STEAM Projects Like a Genius. Her work was recently profiled in The Providence Journal. We were thrilled to be able to have her share her approach to art, writing, math, science, and design with our students. This book and Amy’s ideas inspire the students’ own creativity and connective thinking.
We love how Amy highlights aspects of Leonardo’s process that we encourage in our students as well. Examples included that we learn from mistakes, and failure can be instructive and constructive – write it ALL down!
To begin the day, students in our program had the opportunity to hear Amy speak in an all-program assembly. Next, she visited our math-based classes to walk the students through her “lean zine” project from the book.
The kids loved having her visit and assembling their “lean zines”. Amy enjoyed being able to meet and interact with our clever summer students. They asked excellent questions, added key information, and gave great ideas for the next “lean zine”. This is exactly what Leonardo used to do, and led to his greatest successes!
The “lean zine” is just a sampling from the book, which is chock-full of great projects that use the senses. The projects tie together art, writing, math, and science, and much more. Leonardo’s Art Workshop is a great resource to have around for summer when the kids are searching for something fun and creative to do. What a fun way to focus on National Summer Learning Week through a local, hands-on event for the students. It was an exciting day! We encourage you to explore Leonardo’s Art Workshop: Invent, Create, and Make STEAM Projects Like a Genius by talented and generous author, artist and designer Amy Leidtke.
