RITES Summer School Program: A Teacher’s Perspective

The following is transcribed text from an interview with Liz Ford, a RITES Summer School Program and Rhode Island-certified third-grade and Orton-Gillingham-trained teacher:

“RITES does so many different types of assessments that will make sure the student is going to be matched up with an instructor who has those strengths, who has those techniques and strategies to teach them.”

As a Rhode Island-based nonprofit, RITES offers sliding-scale fees to meet the educational needs of students in Southeastern New England. Click here to learn more about supporting at-risk students.

“I commend Lisa and Halley for all the fundraising and grant-writing to make it possible for so many families to send their children to RITES summer school programs and to individualized tutoring.”

‘RITES sets apart its program by taking the whole child into consideration’

“My training consists of Orton-Gillingham, which is language-based instruction, and has a sequential order, and I apply this throughout the school year when I am teaching my classroom of third graders. [With Orton-Gillingham], I feel like you are giving the whole picture — from parts of sentences, to sentences, to paragraph writing.”

Refining ‘makes the programs work well for the kids’

“I use the Orton-Gillingham program and the Project Read programs that are multi-sensory. I feel like I refine them every year to make the programs work well for the kids. Those are the programs that work well for the kids.”

“The directors here at RITES know that those are my strengths, and they allow me the freedom to build my program creatively.”

Students learn strategies to take back to school

“What I instill in the students is that you are learning many strategies that you can take with you, and you should feel empowered to use them.”

“RITES sets apart its program by taking the whole child into consideration and working with the parents to ensure that the students don’t only get what they need here in the program, but also beyond.”
