Rhode Island Tutorial Supports New Dyslexia Bill
We applaud that the Rhode Island General Assembly has recently passed an education bill designed to address the needs of students with dyslexia. At RITES, we have been effectively working with students with dyslexia for over a decade. Our teachers have the knowledge and specialized training that allow them to meet the needs of these students through the use of multisensory approaches to teaching language skills. For example, we use research-based methods to address the many components of reading, including phonics, fluency, comprehension and vocabulary.
In our one-on-one tutoring sessions, as well as in our small group summer programs, students with dyslexia continue to make measurable gains in their literacy skills. Though research has demonstrated which methods are most effective for pupils with dyslexia, many students do not have access to these instructional methods. We are hopeful that this new legislation will lead to better teacher training and wider access to effective instruction, so that all of Rhode Island’s students with dyslexia can meet their full academic potential.
