Angelia’s learning difference and dyslexia were forcing her to play catch-up in reading and math year after year at home in her “affluent” New York school district. For several years, Angelia’s family has spent summer weeks in Rhode Island so she can attend RITES Summer Academic Programs. Now entering 6th grade, RITES has equipped Angelia with skills and tools she needs to continue to improve her learning skills, embracing her differences and giving herself a brighter tomorrow.
RITES Summer Academic Programs: A Mom Shares Her Perspective
The following is transcribed text from an interview with Tammy Lamagna, Angelia’s mother about the RITES’ Summer Academic Program and how it helped her daughter, Angelia.
“Angelia was in the fourth percentile from a New York [school] district. It is a great district for kids that do not have a learning difference. What we found is that in the fourth percentile nationally for reading and math is not okay. We can’t wait for next year. They grow up so quickly. The summer program made a huge difference. She wanted to come back – Angelia was embracing it. She wants to improve her learning. She is getting her help and understanding she learns different, and she is okay with that.
“Angelia is doing well, and I love the fact that RITES does a progress report. You are tested to see where you are mid-program.
I set up a parent-teacher conference to see how she has developed. In the end, you receive a very detailed analysis to inform her school of where she is now in terms of reading scores.
“She realizes she has to work hard: Because anything you want in life, you have to earn. You have to work hard. The work you do today decides your tomorrow. You decide how hard you want to work, and that decides where you are tomorrow. This is going to give Angelia a brighter tomorrow.
‘I wish we found it sooner’
“You as parents know what’s best for your kid. Never go against that funny feeling in your stomach. You may not have the money for a program that is going to help your child, so you have to find a way to do it.
Find someone to point you in a direction because you need a program that is going to help your child overcome their deficits – and RITES is that program.
“To find a program when their brains are like sponges to absorb it, it’s a gift. This program is a gift. I wish we found it sooner, but we found it. And we’re thankful for that.”
