The Strands:
Word Attack, Fluency, Vocabulary Development, and Comprehension

Beyond the Basics is an in-depth course that focuses on explicitly instructing middle school and high school students in reading and spelling, using a systematic, multisensory approach, while incorporating expected skills, such as fluency, comprehension and vocabulary development.

Why Multisensory for Older Students?  Extensive research has established that a multisensory approach (visual, auditory and kinesthetic) is highly effective for reaching most students in assisting them with the retention of the imparted information, whether they have learning differences or not.  Many teachers use a multisensory approach with younger students, but many middle and high school students continue to need this kind of instruction, especially as they continue to develop their literacy skills.

How do you create a “literacy bundle” that ties together word attack, spelling, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension skills your students must master?
