Summer Programs 2010

Our summer programs offer an enjoyable, multisensory, specialized, educational experience for bright children with a range of learning differences, which affect their classroom performance.

HAMILTON SUMMER PROGRAM - PROVIDENCE:
These intensive 2-, 3-, and 5-week classes are ideal for students who are really struggling academically and need daily exposure to multisensory reading, writing, spelling, math and/or study strategies. Many of these programs are based on the instructional approaches provided by The Hamilton School at Wheeler, a local school-within-a-school for students with language-based learning differences, as well as Rhode Island Tutorial's customized teaching approach. We have partnered with Hamilton to provide this program at the School for the last several years.

ST. ANDREW'S SUMMER PROGRAM - BARRINGTON:
These intensive 3-week classes are designed for students who are below grade-level in certain areas and would benefit from daily exposure to multisensory reading, writing, spelling, math and/or study strategies. These courses are modeled on multisensory, differentiated teaching and reflect both the St. Andrew's School philosophy of reaching a variety of different learners and the Rhode Island Tutorial approach of customized, dynamic instruction. We have partnered with St. Andrew's to offer this program for the last several years.

LEARNING CENTER SUMMER PROGRAM - PAWTUCKET:
Our twice-weekly reading and writing skills classes are for those who have some capability in these areas, but need to enhance and build these skills throughout the summer months. Our individual tutorials are offered for all subjects, focus on specific goals established between the family and the tutor, and are designed to fit into families' summer schedules (these can also be ongoing into the academic year).

Our courses are admissions-based to ensure proper grouping and placement of interested students. The deadline for submitting applications for our 2010 summer programs is May 28th. Please call for availability after this date.

AT OUR SUMMER PROGRAM, ONE CAN EXPECT:

A Multifaceted
Teaching and Learning Experience
We know there are many ways to approach education. At the same time, not everyone learns the same way. We incorporate visual, auditory and “hands-on” means to deliver information so that every student has an opportunity to access material the best way possible. The end result is a fully engaged class and teacher, working together and experiencing academic success.

Low Teacher/Student Ratio
Each class is kept deliberately small (4-8 students per teacher) to ensure individualized attention.

Experienced Director and Staff
Our summer school directors have extensive experience with learning differences as educators and administrators. Our directors select experienced, dynamic, qualified teachers who approach teaching in a multisensory, systematic, individualized way.

Self-Esteem
Even the most reluctant summer students quickly discover the power of meeting and befriending other students who share their struggles and strengths; by day two, under the guidance of caring, energetic, knowledgeable teachers, they realize learning can be fun and accessible. Ultimately, they begin to understand how intelligent and talented they really are.

Reference Notebook
Each student comes away with a “portfolio” of their summer work, including reminders of the strategies used.

Full Progress Report
Identifies specific strengths, tracks progress and suggests areas on which to concentrate, with helpful follow-through ideas, such as program recommendations and family activities to reinforce concepts.

Tutor Referrals
Access to our wide range of experienced local tutors for those who want to continue the work started for a comprehensive year-round plan.
