DYSLEXIA

“Dyslexic students need a different approach to learning language from that employed in most classrooms. They need to be taught, slowly and thoroughly, the basic elements of their language—the sounds and the letters which represent them—and how to put these together and take them apart. They have to have lots of practice in having their writing hands, eyes, ears, and voices working together for conscious organization and retention of their learning.” Margaret Byrd Rawson, a former President of the International Dyslexia Association (IDA)

 About Dyslexia
Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede the growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.”

At Rhode Island Tutorial & Educational Services our literacy teachers are trained in direct multisensory methods that have been proven through scientific research to improve the skills of students who are dyslexic and students who experience difficulty with spelling and reading fluently.  In this regard, these teachers are educational therapists.  These specialists have experience and and training in the following multisensory methods; Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, Telian and Project Read.

Kindergarten - Grade 8 Tutoring | High School Tutoring | Adult Tutoring

Our summer programs offer Orton-Gillingham based classes.  The focus of each class is training in a phonemically-based, multisensory method.  Students also participate in guided reading lessons to work on comprehension and engage in a variety of activities to promote reading fluency.
